History
Owners Stephen Adams and John Fearing opened the moxie concept in fall of 1999. This idea was to have multiple small locations under ten chairs that concentrated on the community, education and clients. The first year started out with only four people now has grown over the last twelve years to a thriving business with over 25 stylists, 5 salon coordinators, 2 managers and two locations. We believe that we would not be in business except for the relationships that we have built with our employees and our customers.
Atmosphere
Both locations resemble each other with their young, fun and edgy atmosphere. The bright, but yet soothing greys are the main color along with a strong accent of intense orange and blue; all with some metallic furniture and bright red craftsman toolboxes as work stations. Mixing modernism with industrialism makes a strong statement with the strange and eclectic music selection that ranges from classical to punk with a mix of today and yesterday’s hits there is just enough so that you know that you to can be here. Yet one cannot forget to mention the customer care. We ask every team member to follow the rule of 7, which consists of seven seconds to meet and greet each entering customer, seven minute shampoos and if not busy each seven minutes to ask each customer and other team members if they need anything. It is about getting to know your team’s customers. The customer comes first at all times. Treat them as if they are the kings and queens that they deserve to be.
Community Service
Moxie is committed to giving back to the community by holding a hair raising event in the fall and in the spring. How can you expect the neighborhood that you work in to support your business if you are not willing to give back to it?
In order to meet this philosophy around Thanksgiving each fall Moxie has raised money for Street Works and Kulture Klub, two programs that work with homeless youth. This hair raising event is done on the same weekend as The Great American Sleep Out where people around the nation gather donations and sleep outside to raise awareness and advocacy for homelessness. Every year some of the staff raises their own pledges and sleeps out in the front of the salon. The salon is open for twenty-four hours and they cut hair all night long while others are sleeping out front.
In the spring they usually raise money for a different non-profit. For many years Moxie raised money for B-Girl Be, a summit that is raising awareness of women in hip hop. This was a day-long event which includes: performances from local slam poets, break dancers, DJ’s and visual artists. The year before the salon raised funds for the Minnesota Chamber Orchestra. Moxie Hair Salon is made up of a very diverse and eclectic group of stylists and clients!
Work and education
It is amazing to watch fun and funky, to polished and shining colors with cuts on clients from all ages. You can tell their inner self by how they wear their hair. Everything from the hot steam towel treatment, that comes complimentary with each shampoo, to the precision haircuts show that this team is tight and their education is key. The day you stop learning is the day you stop doing hair. You cannot have excellence without continuous learning.
